NBT'S
The NBT's (National Benchmark Test) registrations are open!
While the NSC exam is a school leaving test to confirm if a learner has mastered the school
curriculum, the NBT's are a university entrance exam to measure academic readiness, as to
whether a potential student is ready for tertiary study.
There are two tests, the Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL), written by all applicants and Mathematics (MAT), written by applicants where maths is a course requirement.
Each test is 3 hours and consists of multiple choice questions. Both tests are written on the same
day, the AQL in the morning and the MAT in the afternoon. Performance on the NBT's is measured
on these levels: PROFICIENT (will cope with the demands of tertiary study), INTERMEDIATE
(might face challenges and need some academic support) or BASIC (unprepared for tertiary study).
Registrations are done online at www.nbt.ac.za and scheduled on most Saturday's, with the first
available date the 14 May 2022. The test/s can be written at a physical venue or online with a test
invigilator, using a webcam as validation of identity, on a LockDown browser application, to be
installed before the test, with comprehensive instructions provided by CEA.
The NBT's are only compulsory for some universities, with the test results sent directly to the tertiary institution. Your learners are able to write the test twice in one year, should they feel they could
improve after their first attempt.
